Macranthoidin A is a triterpenoid saponin that has been modified chemically and used in Chinese herbal medicine. Macranthoidin A has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Macranthoidin A inhibits the growth of MRSA by binding to the bacterial cell membrane and inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. This agent has also been shown to have a pharmacokinetic profile similar to other antibiotics, which may be useful in calibrating pharmacokinetic studies. Macranthoidin A is not active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
