Melittoside is a fructus ligustri found in the genus Ligustrum. It has been used as a Chinese medicine preparation for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer. Melittoside has antioxidative properties, which may be due to its phenolic acid content. The antioxidative property of melittoside may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Melittoside also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
Melittoside is a potent inhibitor of prostate cancer cells, with IC50 values at 4.0 µmol/L and 16.7 µmol/L for LNCaP and PC-3 cells respectively. It inhibits cell proliferation by suppressing the expression of cyclin D1 and p27KIP1 proteins, leading to cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase.
