(S)-4-Methyl-2,5-oxazolidinedione is a structural analog of the natural substrate for the enzyme, which is 4-methyl-2,5-diketopiperazine (MDP) and has been used as a model system to study the activation energy of ring opening. It reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to produce 2,5-oxazolidinedione and ammonium chloride. The reaction solution is then purified by extraction with a mixture of acetonitrile and hexane.
The product can be polymerized to form poly(2,5-oxazolidinedione), which can be used in the synthesis of polymers that have biorecognition elements. These polymers are characterized by their high stability and low reactivity.
