Methyl 7-keto-3a-hydroxy-5b-cholanoate is a cholic acid derivative that has been shown to reduce intestinal cholesterol absorption. It is also used in the treatment of genetic disorders such as familial hypercholesterolemia. Ursodeoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring bile acid, is produced from methyl 7-keto-3a-hydroxy-5b-cholanoate by the action of bacteria in the human colon.
