Product Information
- [Methyl(phenyl)amino](triphenyl)phosphonium iodide
- phosphorus(1+), (N-methylbenzenaminato)triphenyl-, iodide (1:1)
N-Methyl-N-phenylamino)triphenylphosphonium Iodide is a reagent that is used to synthesize amines, alcohols, and carbon tetrachloride from iodomethane. It can be used as an analog for N-methyl-N-(2-aminoethyl)amine (MePEA). This reagent can be prepared by reacting iodine with phosphorus pentachloride in the presence of a base. Mechanistic studies reveal that this reagent reacts with iodomethane to form methylene chloride and triphenylphosphine oxide. The latter reacts with water to produce phosphorous acid and hydrochloric acid. This reaction also produces hydrogen chloride gas, which may cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract. Preparative methods are not available for this compound.
