Methyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide (MDO) is a chemical compound that has been synthesized in the form of an amorphous solid. MDO is soluble in the organic solvent, methyl ketones, and it reacts with water to form phosphine gas and methyl sulfoxide. The structure of MDO is a basic skeleton consisting of two phenyl groups linked by a double bond. It has been shown to be biodegradable and can be used as a catalyst for the synthesis of vitamin D3 from 7-dehydrocholesterol. MDO can also be used as a reaction product in the production of zirconium oxide.
