6-Methoxy-4-methylquinoline hydrate is a chiral, red blood cell-selective antimalarial agent that is used in the treatment of malaria. It has been shown to have activity against both chloroquine-resistant strains and quinine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. 6-Methoxy-4-methylquinoline hydrate binds to the parasite's lactam ring, preventing the conversion of heme into biliverdin. This prevents the formation of haeme, which is needed for the production of hemoglobin. This leads to anemia and decreased ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen.
