2-Mercapto-5-methoxybenzothiazole is an active compound that has been shown to have a modulating effect on calcium-activated chloride channels. This compound interacts with the calcium ion and inhibits the opening of these channels, thereby affecting the blood pressure. In vivo studies have shown that 2-mercapto-5-methoxybenzothiazole has vasodilating effects on carotid arteries. It also increases the membrane potential and causes pharmacological dilations in isolated rat aorta. 2-Mercapto-5-methoxybenzothiazole binds to the active site of hmao-a, which is an enzyme that converts 3,4,3',4'-tetrahydroxyphenylalanine (LTP) into LTYP and TYP.
