Methyl 4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylate, HCl is a synthetic reuptake inhibitor that binds to dopamine receptors. It has been shown to be effective against the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and the marine sponge Halichondria okadai. Methyl 4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylate, HCl is not active against bacteria. The binding of this drug to dopamine receptors leads to an increase in dopamine levels by blocking the reuptake of dopamine molecules into presynaptic cells. This results in increased activity of dopaminergic neurons and a subsequent increase in dopaminergic neurotransmission. Methyl 4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylate, HCl also has anti-fungal properties due to its ability to inhibit ergosterol synthesis via allylation or spontaneous reactions.
