Product Information
- (4-Sulfanylphenyl)Methanol
4-Mercaptobenzyl alcohol (4MBA) is an organosulfur compound that is used in cancer therapy and as a disinfectant. 4MBA has been shown to be effective against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other bacteria that are resistant to erythromycin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. 4MBA also has proapoptotic activity and can induce apoptosis in cells by binding to the cysteine residues of proteins such as p53 or Bax. The functional groups on the molecule allow for hydrogen bonding interactions with the amino acid residues of proteins. The spacing between atoms on the molecule allows for electrostatic interactions with metal ions such as chloride or metal surfaces. These interactions lead to electron transfer from 4MBA to the metal surface, which can be used in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
