Methyl Trifluoroacrylate is a monomer that belongs to the group of hydroxyl-containing compounds. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 100°C and has an activation energy of 5.6 kJ/mol. Methyl Trifluoroacrylate is used in the production of health care products, such as contact lenses, intraocular lenses, and other ophthalmic devices. This monomer can be polymerized by means of ammonium persulfate catalysis or by heating with calcium carbonate to prepare polymethyl trifluoroacrylate (PMMA). The reaction mechanism for this monomer involves the formation of a reactive intermediate that reacts with the free hydroxyl group on the second molecule of methyl trifluoroacrylate, forming a covalent bond between them. The functional groups present in this compound are hydroxy, chloro, and carboxylic acid.
