Methoxytris(pentafluorophenyl)silane is an efficient and selective transfer reagent for the coupling of aldehydes and ketones with amines. Methoxytris(pentafluorophenyl)silane is also a reagent for the preparation of iminium salts, which are used as cations in organic synthesis. Salicylaldehyde and aldehydes react with methoxytris(pentafluorophenyl)silane to form the corresponding hydridosilanes. This reaction can be carried out under mild conditions using solvents such as tetrahydrofuran or dichloromethane. The efficiency of this reaction is increased when the substituent on the aromatic ring is electron-withdrawing, such as fluorine, nitro, or cyano groups.
