Description:

1-Methyl-1-nitroso-3-(4-fluorophenyl)urea (FMU) is a nitrosourea that inhibits the synthesis of DNA. It has been used as a chemotherapeutic agent in oncology and has been shown to be active against certain types of cancer cells. FMU is not mutagenic and does not induce sister chromatid exchanges or chromosomal aberrations. The maximal frequency of mutation in mammalian cells can be determined by sampling erythrocytes for staining with trypan blue, followed by counting the number of blue-stained cells. FMU is an inducer of cycles, which can be demonstrated by incubating the sample with methylnitrosourea (MNU) and measuring the concentration of MNU over time.
