Description

N-Methyl-2-(alpha-methyl-3-trifluoromethylphenethylamino)acetamide (MTPA) is a toxic chemical that has been used as a rodenticide. It is also an efficient, inexpensive, and rapid screening tool for carcinogens. MTPA has been shown to be potent in the inhibition of DNA synthesis in human cells, with a potency of 10 times that of 5-fluorouracil. This compound is commercially available and can be synthesized by stepwise methods. MTPA is not acutely toxic but can cause liver and kidney damage if ingested or inhaled over long periods.
