4-(1-Methylpyrrolidin-1-yl)-but-2-ynyl N-(4-fluorophenyl)carbamate (4MPBPC) is a selective and potent antagonist of the m1 muscarinic receptor. 4MPBPC has an affinity constant of 2.8 nM for the m1 receptor, which is 10 times higher than that for the h1 histamine receptor. It has been shown to be effective in spasticity in animal models and as a diagnostic agent for acetylcholine levels in the pancreas. This drug also acts as a noncompetitive antagonist at the cholinergic synapse, by binding to the m1 receptors on the postjunctional membrane. The binding of 4MPBPC inhibits acetylcholine release, leading to an increase in acetylcholine concentrations in neurons and subsequent blockade of postsynaptic muscle contraction.
