1-Naphtholphthalein is a diazonium salt that is used as an optical sensor. It reacts with hydroxyl groups in the presence of hydrochloric acid and potassium dichromate to produce a light-sensitive red dye. The reaction products are then exposed to light to produce a color change. This process can be repeated many times, allowing for the detection of low concentrations of analytes. 1-Naphtholphthalein is also used as a template molecule in acyl halide synthesis reactions.
