2-Nitro-alpha-[(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)methyl]-1H-imidazole-1-ethanol is a small molecule that selectively targets hypoxic tumor cells. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of mammary carcinomas and radiation induced tumors. 2-Nitro-alpha-[(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)methyl]-1H-imidazole-1-ethanol inhibits cellular respiration by binding to mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase. This binding prevents the formation of ATP and leads to cell death. Optical imaging probes have been used to demonstrate its effectiveness in vivo. Clinical trials have demonstrated its potential as a cancer therapeutic agent.
