(Nle 4)-alpha-MSH is a peptide that binds to the melanocortin receptor. It has been radiolabelled with Technetium-99m and used in diagnostic strategies to detect human tumours. (Nle 4)-alpha-MSH may be synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis, which involves coupling the amino acid N-terminal alpha-methylbenzyl ester of L-phenylalanine to an amino acid of interest. This coupling reaction is performed on a resin consisting of amine groups, such as polystyrene beads or glass beads. The advantages of this strategy are that it can be carried out without intervention from organic solvents and it avoids the use of hazardous reagents.
