Nicarbazin is a nitrofuran that is used as a feed additive in animal feeds. It is also used to prevent or treat coccidiosis, an intestinal disease caused by the protozoan parasite Eimeria tenella, in chickens and turkeys. Nicarbazin inhibits growth of coccidia oocysts (eggs) and prevents oocyst production in the intestine. The drug has been shown to have no significant effect on the antigenicity of either nicarbazin or its metabolites when administered with a human food antigen. Nicarbazin also has been shown to be safe for animals such as dogs, cats, and horses at dosages up to 100 mg per kg body weight per day for periods of up to six months.
