5-Nitropyrimidine-4,6-diamine is a formamide derivative that was synthesized to investigate the mechanism of cancer cells. It has been shown to induce cancer cell death in human lung and colon cancer cells. The mechanism of cell death is not yet known, but it is hypothesized that 5-Nitropyrimidine-4,6-diamine induces DNA damage by reacting with formaldehyde or hydrogen peroxide to produce nitro radicals and superoxides. These reactive oxygen species cause DNA damage and apoptosis. 5-Nitropyrimidine-4,6-diamine also reacts with malonate to form a disulfide intermediate which may react with hydrogen peroxide to generate nitro radicals and superoxides.
