The molecular weight of this compound is 154.1 g/mol and the melting point is -104°C. 1-(2-Nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole can be synthesized by reacting thiourea with phenylhydrazine and nitric acid, which produces the desired product in high yield. This compound also has the ability to act as an electron acceptor in triplet state, which means it can be used for fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). 1-(2-Nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole also has strong x-ray diffraction properties and exhibits strong absorption features in the IR range from 600 to 800 nm.
