2-(4-Nitrobenzyl)pyridine is a nucleoside that contains an amino group. It has been shown to be able to be converted into 2'-deoxycytidine and 2'-deoxyadenosine, two nucleosides that are used in the synthesis of acyclic nucleosides. The conversion of 2-(4-nitrobenzyl)pyridine to these nucleosides occurs by the action of sulfites, which convert the nitro group to an amine. This reaction can also take place in the presence of sodium hydroxide or zinc chloride.
The sequence of the molecule can be found using a number of techniques, including dioxane and cidofovir.
2-(4-Nitrobenzyl)pyridine is also used in the production of cyclopropylamine, which is a drug used for the treatment of HIV infection.
