It has been synthesised from the reaction of 5-hydroxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde and sodium carbonate in the presence of chloride. 3-(2-Nitrophenyl)oxiran-2-yl](phenyl)methanone has shown degradative properties, as well as spectroscopic studies that suggest its mechanism of action may involve hydrogen chloride and an n-oxide intermediate.
