Description:
Nonane is a liquid hydrocarbon that is used as an industrial solvent and as fuel for diesel engines. Nonane has been shown to have a protective effect on the bowel by inhibiting the enzyme activities of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Nonane also protects against microbial infection, which may be due to its structural similarity to malonic acid, an important intermediate in the Krebs cycle. Nonane has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to fatty acids and water vapor with high affinity. The mechanism of this inhibition is unknown but may involve an induced-fit reaction, which would be consistent with Langmuir adsorption isotherm data.
