Product Information

Name:
2-(2-Nitroethyl)-1,3-dioxolane
Synonyms:
  • 3-Nitropropionaldehyde Ethylene Glycol Acetal
  • 1,3-Dioxolane, 2-(2-nitroethyl)-
  • 2-(2-NITROETHYL)-1,3-DIOXOLANE
Description:

2-(2-Nitroethyl)-1,3-dioxolane is a reagent that is used in the synthesis of prostaglandins. It is a mixture of two isomers, one with a nitro group on the alpha carbon and the other with a nitro group on the beta carbon. The former is more reactive than the latter. Dioxolanes react with electrophiles to form dioxolane anions, which are then attacked by nucleophiles, such as alcohols or amines, to form condensation products. Dioxolanes undergo an aldol condensation reaction with carbonyl compounds to produce β-hydroxyesters.
