2-(2-nitrophenyl)ethanol is a nitro compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. 2-(2-Nitrophenyl)ethanol has been shown to have a high chemical stability and is not susceptible to oxidation. It has been found to be a substrate for the diazonium salt synthesis when reacted with hydrochloric acid and nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, which produces 2-(2-nitrophenyl)-1,1-diazene. The diazonium salt can be acylated with sodium citrate or chloride to produce the corresponding nitrosobenzene or nitrosophenol. These products are reactive with myocardial cells and are used in enzymatic methods for measuring infarct size.
