5-Nitrobenzo[d]isoxazole (NBI) is a heterocyclic compound that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the reaction rates of many enzymes. Inhibiting the enzyme's catalytic mechanism by binding to its active site, the compound binds with the substrate and forms a covalent bond with it. The kinetic studies on NBI have been carried out in both a bifunctional and monofunctional configuration, and it has been found that the monofunctional form of NBI binds more tightly to its substrate than does the bifunctional form. Cryo-electron microscopy simulations have shown that NBI can bind to protonated amide groups at physiological pH levels, which indicates that it is possible for this drug to be used as an immunomodulatory agent.
