N-(Ethanol)maleimide is a hydroxyl compound that also inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro, as well as trigeminal nerve pain in animal models. N-(Ethanol)maleimide has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of lymphocytic leukemia and breast cancer cells. The mechanism for this inhibition is not known, but it may be due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and act on neurons. N-(Ethanol)maleimide also inhibits lipid peroxidation induced by atorvastatin through an unknown mechanism.
