Description:

3-Nitrodibenzofuran is a dietary compound that has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in the bacterial cell. It binds to the DNA of bacteria and prevents it from being transcribed into RNA. 3-Nitrodibenzofuran inhibits the growth of Salmonella typhimurium and other bacteria. The compound also has been shown to bind with chloride ions, which may be due to its aromatic hydrocarbon moiety. 3-Nitrodibenzofuran may be used for diagnostic purposes because it reacts with magnetic materials and emits light when heated at 230°C. It can also be used as a reagent for detecting aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental samples, such as soil or water, due to its high affinity for these substances.
