(4-Nitrophenyl)methanesulfonylchloride is an inhibitor of the enzyme nitrate reductase, which is found in many bacteria. It also inhibits chloride ion uptake by gram-negative bacteria. (4-Nitrophenyl)methanesulfonylchloride is used as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and for the treatment of epilepsy. This drug has been shown to inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, but not against gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Acinetobacter baumannii. The drug has been shown to have antibacterial effects against these gram-negative bacteria in vitro, but studies in vivo have been inconclusive.
