3-Nitrostyrene is a nitro compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. In the presence of catalysts, 3-nitrostyrene can be hydrogenated to 3-aminonitrobenzene, which has been shown to exhibit inhibitory effects on the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. The mechanism of this inhibition has been studied and found to be due to nitro group displacement from the enzyme's heme cofactor. This product can also undergo chemoselective reactions with various functional groups, such as alkyl halides or amines.
