Np(trans-4-N-pentylcyclohexyl)phenol has been shown to undergo UV irradiation and form polymers with disordered structures, which are stable to further UV irradiation. The homopolymers formed from this polymerization are liquid crystals with conformations that can be varied by the substitution of the substituents on the phenol ring. The molecular structure of Np(trans-4-N-pentylcyclohexyl)phenol is composed of four phenolic rings that are connected to each other through alternating single and double bonds.
