Niobocenedichloride is a metal-containing organometallic compound that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It binds to the cavity of cancer cells, which are characterized by their high lipid content, and enters the cell where it reacts with intracellular targets. Niobocenedichloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumour cell lines in vitro and in vivo. This drug also has antitumour activity as it can cause DNA damage, leading to inhibition of tumour cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis. Niobocenedichloride is a coordination compound with two methoxy groups and a central metal atom (niobium). The mechanism for its anticancer activity is still not fully understood but may involve transfer from the metal centre to an organic molecule or fatty acid.
