Description

2-[3-(4-Nitrophenyl)propylamino]ethanol (2-APAEE) is a substance with antiarrhythmic properties. It has been shown to be an effective antiarrhythmic agent that inhibits the sodium borohydride-induced arrhythmias in guinea pigs. 2-APAEE also blocks the effects of propylamine on the heart, which is thought to be due to its ability to form a condensation product with diborane, which is then hydrolyzed by water. The condensation product formed can then react with carboxylic acids in the presence of high concentrations of sodium borohydride and diborane to produce carboxylic acid esters. This process is known as the Roux reaction and is used as a way of producing organic acids cheaply.
