Neodecanoylchloride is a fatty acid chlorides that are commonly used as polymerization initiators in the production of cellulose derivatives. The reaction time and radiation depend on the desired degree of polymerization and the type of cellulose derivative. Neodecanoylchloride is an oily liquid with a colorless to light yellow appearance. It is soluble in lower alcohols, ethers, acetone, and chloroform but not in water. It can be prepared by treatment of hydroxy-substituted phenols with hydrogen chloride in the presence of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. This reagent also functions as a detergent additive for industrial or household detergents, where it has been shown to have good dispersing properties.
