1,8-Naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It has a carboxylic acid group which is hydrolyzed by serum and hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This active form is also susceptible to chemical reactions with amines and other amino acids found in biological fluids. This drug has been shown to be effective against bacterial infections of muscle tissue and bone resorption. Its pharmacokinetic properties have been studied in rats, and it was found that 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid is absorbed rapidly from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood stream and distributed throughout the body.
