It is characterized as an intramolecular hydrogen bond donor, also known as a hydrogen bond acceptor. The crystallographic data for 4-Nitropyridine-2-carboxylic acid1-oxide show that it has a monoclinic crystal system and space group P21/n with lattice parameters a=12.5, b=11.5, c=7.5 and beta=-120 degrees. The molecule has two nitro groups on the pyridine rings, which are responsible for its yellow color. 4-Nitropyridine-2-carboxylic acid1-oxide also has fluorescence properties, which are observed when irradiated with UV light at 365 nm.
