1-(4-Nitrophenyl)piperidine is a nitro compound that is used as a solvent. It has been shown to be stable in the presence of other solvents, such as acetonitrile and chloroform, and can be used to dissolve polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride. 1-(4-Nitrophenyl)piperidine is also a potential candidate for use in nanotechnology. The nitro group on the molecule can be oxidized by oxygen to form the corresponding nitrate ester. The nitro groups are electron-donating and can be used to create a polymer with pendant amines or chlorides. This polymer will have an alternating pattern of amine and chloride functional groups that would give it semiconducting properties. This type of material would find use in organic solar cells or organic field effect transistors (OFETs).
