Description:

2-Nitrobenzofuran is a low energy molecule with a molecular weight of 183.2 g/mol and 2 methoxy groups. It is an antimicrobial agent that can be used as an alternative to chlorine. 2-Nitrobenzofuran reacts with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of chloride to form 1,3-dihydroxy-2-nitrobenzofuran, which is then reacted with phenol to form 1,3-dihydroxyphenyl 2-nitrobenzofuran. This reaction produces the caproic acid nitro group and acylation reaction product. The reaction solution is heated in hydrochloric acid to produce 2,6-dinitrophenol (DNP).
