3-Nitro-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-c]pyridine (NOP) is an electrophilic compound that can be synthesized by bromination and nitration of 1H-pyrrole. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of 5-azaindole. NOP has a high yield when synthesized using these methods. It has been shown to have isomeric properties, with the nitro group being on one side of the ring or the other. The azaindole ring system can be synthesized from NOP by reacting it with ammonia and cyanamide.
