2-Nonenal is a reactive aldehyde that is formed from the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in human leukemia cells, K562, and to cause DNA damage. 2-Nonenal has also been shown to induce oxidative stress, as evidenced by the reduction of ATP levels in human serum and rat liver microsomes. This compound may be genotoxic due to its ability to form adducts with DNA bases, which can lead to mutations in genes. 2-Nonenal also induces mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death by activating caspases, which are proteases that help regulate the process of apoptosis. Its reported physiological function is anti-inflammatory and it can inhibit COX2 activity in vitro. 2-Nonenal binds to wild-type but not mutant MDA-MB 231 cells and is an effective monoclonal antibody target for cancer therapy.
