4-Nitropyridine-N-oxide is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of nitro compounds. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of proteins. 4-Nitropyridine-N-oxide binds to picolinic acid, which is an intermediate in protein synthesis, and prevents it from being converted into nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of proteins vital for cell division. The intermolecular hydrogen bond between this molecule and picolinic acid is responsible for this effect. It has also been shown that 4-Nitropyridine-N-oxide can be reduced by electron transfer to form nitric oxide, which causes an increase in oxidative stress. This reaction may also lead to increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in cells.
