3-Nitrophenylmethanamine is a chloride that has intramolecular hydrogen bonding. It can be oxidized to form an azobenzene and a nitro group, and is also found as oxidation products of 3-nitrophenol. 3-Nitrophenylmethanamine is commercially available in the form of its sodium salt, or can be synthesized by reacting phthalimides with benzaldehyde and nitrous acid. This compound belongs to the class of compounds called phenylazodicarboxylic acid esters, which are used in clinical chemistry as an indicator for erythrocyte acetylsalicylic acid concentration. The structure of this molecule was determined by X-ray crystallography and spectrometric data. It has been shown that this compound binds to the enzyme activities responsible for the degradation of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
