5-Nitrobenzimidazole nitrate (5NBN) is an organic compound that can be synthesized by reacting 5-nitrobenzimidazole with nitric acid in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. It is a white solid that is soluble in organic solvents such as diethylene glycol and acetone. This compound also has a stabilizing effect on polymers, increasing their fluidity. The use of 5NBN as a monomer for the production of polyurethane foams is limited because it leaves behind a residue during the reaction process. However, this residue does not affect foam quality. For treatment methods, 5NBN can be reacted with calcium carbonate to produce calcium nitrate or ammonium nitrate which are used as fertilizers.
