- Fluoranthene, 2-nitro-
2-Nitrofluoranthene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that can be found in cigarette smoke and automobile exhaust. It is a potent mutagen and carcinogen and has been shown to cause cancer in animals. 2-Nitrofluoranthene is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) to form the reactive electrophilic intermediate, which reacts with DNA to form adducts. These adducts are carcinogenic and can lead to mutations in the DNA sequence, which may lead to cancer. The effective dose for 2-nitrofluoranthene is unknown, but it appears that concentrations of this chemical greater than 5 ng/m3 could be harmful to humans.
