Norsanguinarine is a molecule that is part of the class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. It has been shown to be cytotoxic to liver cells and tissue culture cells, as well as inhibiting protein synthesis in these cells. Norsanguinarine has also been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in cell cultures. This molecule also inhibits the growth of bowel disease-causing bacteria and autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. The mechanism for this inhibition is not known, but may be due to its ability to inhibit protopine biosynthesis or cryptopine biosynthesis.
