Nifurtoinol is a cross-linking agent that has antimicrobial properties. It is used to treat infectious diseases, such as sepsis and endocarditis, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It can be implanted into the eye to treat choroidal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration. Nifurtoinol binds to bacterial cell walls by forming covalent bonds with hydroxyl groups on the bacterial surface. This results in an inflammatory response that reduces the number of bacteria. Nifurtoinol is active against a wide range of microbes and is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial drug.
