N-Acetyl-DL-serine is a hydrophobic amino acid that is synthesized in the body. It can be found as a free form or as a salt with malonate, phosphate, or acetate. N-Acetyl-DL-serine has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus, although it is not active against bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris. N-Acetyl-DL-serine has also been used for the immobilization of DNA fragments on solid surfaces. This amino acid is attached to an acidic resin through the formation of amide bonds with the carboxylic acid groups on the resin and can be used for protein synthesis and optical detection of DNA strands.
