N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone is a biocompatible polymer that is used in many different applications. It has a phase transition temperature of about -10 degrees Celsius and copolymers can be created with other polymers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone. N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone has been shown to have strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and laser ablation experiments have shown that it reacts with water vapor. It is also soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, or chloroform. In addition, N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone has been shown to react with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form a reaction solution. This polymerase chain reaction experiment was done using human serum as the template DNA, which shows the ability of this polymer to bind to nucleic acids.
