2-Nitro-5-thiocyanatobenzoic acid (NTBC) is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the wild-type strain of the bacteria and prevents it from growing. NTBC binds to the disulfide bond in haptoglobin, which is a protein that transports hemoglobin, preventing the protein from functioning normally. This mechanism of action has been shown to work on various strains of bacteria, including those resistant to antibiotics.
